Italian snowboard company hires art school grad to make websites and shred the gnar
Company: Northwave North America
Role: Web Design, Production, Code
My first job after graduation from AIS was at Northwave, an Italian snowboard boot and cycling shoe company. The snow side of the business was based in Seattle.
As a recent grad, I had the benefit of mentorship and training from experienced art directors Tony Sandoval and Chris France.
Most people at the office went snowboarding together often (sometimes both weekend days at Stevens Pass or Crystal, with after-work rally to Alpental during the week). What a blast! I was privlidged to be able to establish lifelong friendships with many of my colleauges.
The sites were 100% Flash - with animation and sound effects - ah, the good ol' days.

Big games from the big guys in Redmond, WA
Company: Microsoft
Role: Web Design, Web Development
In 2002 I joined Microsoft to design web sites to promote their PC games. A year later I joined the growing Xbox.com team.
Working as a member of a large team I was able to learn more about the new frontiers of online marketing and e-commerce.
I worked with Creative Director Nate Williams, Art Director Rinaldi Parungao, and designer Jon Garn.
Most of the work was day-to-day graphics design and Flash animation. We also redesigned the site twice during my tenure.
2006 - 2010
Beanies, and Caps, and Balaclavas, oh my!
Company: Coal Headwear
Role: Web Design, Front-end Development
In 2006 I left Microsoft and started consulting. One of my first clients was Seattle-based cold-weather hat company Coal Headwear. From 2006 to 2010, Coal Headwear gave me the responsibility to design, develop, deploy and manage their online catalog and e-commerce system.
The first year we built a simple catalog and kept a seperate e-commerce page at shop.coalheadwear.com.
The second year we built a custom e-commerce system using Ruby on Rails that we maintained through 2010.
One of the best parts of working with the Coal team was working with great photography and graphic design led by creative director Aaron Draplin, a man now famous for Field Notes.
When the iPhone launched, I asked myself the question: "How might we design this website for a new smaller sized screen?". Using HTML tables and CSS percentage widths, I was able to scale the site effectively for a "responsive" design in 2008. This was a few years before that name was coined in 2010 as the patterns for responsive web design were discovered and formalized.

Role: Web Design, Web Development
Buena Carta is a restaurant guide for Buenos Aires, Argentina available in English and Spanish. I served as the designer and front-end engineer on a team of three. Buena Carta has over 1400 restaurants available for delicious adventure and review.
I worked with two other developers to design and build BuenaCarta.com, taking responsibility for the design and implementation of the front-end, dipping my toes into the Rails backend now and again and leading the internationalization and localization efforts.

Role: Web Design, Web Development
Union makes the highest-quality snowboard bindings available in the world. When the brand was initially getting started we created a web experience to show-off the product and draw people into the Union story. Thankfully this story spread and Union now stands on a solid reputation.
From 2006 to 2008 I was responsible for both the design and development of UnionBindingCompany.com. Pictured here are screenshots from the 2008 site.
